My Top 5 Reasons to eat Local Food

Eating locally grown food is such a privilege. It makes me feel rich! I am completely hooked on it because everything just tastes better and I see that it benefits both myself and my community.

Here are my top five reasons to eat local food:

1. Supports local farms and businesses: Buying local food keeps local farms, food producers and local businesses able to provide jobs in our communities.

2. Less travel/waste: Local food travels much less distance to market than typical fresh or processed grocery store foods, therefore generating fewer greenhouse gases. Because of the shorter distribution chain, less food is wasted in process.

3. More freshness/taste: Local food is fresher, healthier and tastes better, because it spends less time traveling to your plate. Plus, when you buy more local food, you’ll discover interesting new foods, tasty new ways to prepare it and get to enjoy the pleasures of each season’s foods.

4. Good for the land: Local food encourages diversity of local agriculture, which reduces single crops growing over a wide area which wears out the soil. Buying local food helps local farms survive financially, keeping the land from being redeveloped into suburban sprawl.

5. Connects us with each other: Local foods create more vibrant communities by connecting people with the farmers and food producers. We had a blast the other day getting hugs and smiles from our farmers and friends while visiting the Hillcrest Farmers Market this week.

To me, being connected to the origin of my food just keeps life…real!
