Coming this week 1/15/18: the benefits of food biodiversity

Before we jump into the topic of biodiversity, we’re thrilled to announce a new local farm joining the Daily Harvest Express family: BeWise Ranch! Founded in 1977, BeWise is a USDA certified organic farm located in the Santa Fe Valley just a few miles east of San Diego, and they’re nationally known for the quality of their produce and farming practices.

Farm Biodiversity, Dietary Diversity, and Your Health

At this point, it’s pretty well established in the medical literature that a primarily plant-based diet is the best choice for optimal health. That doesn’t necessarily mean you should be a vegetarian or vegan, only that you should get the majority of your calories from whole or minimally processed fruits, veggies, and grains.

Ideally, those foods are also sourced from local, organic farms. Why?

  1. Economics – For one, eating local food is better for our local economy. Keeping money circulating here in San Diego translates to job creation, better salaries, and a deeper local tax base.
  2. Pesticide Exposure & Nutrition – As multiple meta analyses have concluded, eating organic food reduces your exposure to pesticides and heavy metals while also ensuring that you get more nutrient-dense foods.
  3. Better For the Local Environment – Want cleaner air and water? Want more carbon in our soil instead of the atmosphere? Supporting organic farms is a great way to keep San Diego (and the world) cleaner and safer for us all.

More Food Diversity In Your CSA

We started Daily Harvest Express to make it easier for San Diego residents like you to access a wide diversity of local organic foods. We’ve always loved local farm CSAs, but one problem that many CSA customers experience is a lack of diversity in the offerings since its all coming from a single farm. Getting the same thing in your CSA every week can become tiresome.

That’s one of the reasons Daily Harvest Express was born: we saw this problem and realized we could support local farms AND provide customers with a far greater product diversity by pooling over a dozen local farms under one CSA delivery service.

The result? As you can see from the list of what’s available this week and where its from (at the top of this article), everybody wins–our farmers, you, and our growing business!

This means you get to try a wide variety of fresh, seasonal produce every week. This variety doesn’t just make your life more flavorful, it also means you get a wider range of vitamins and nutrients in your diet, keeping you healthier in the process.

Lastly, just as biodiversity is important to the health of an ecosystem like a forest or farm, it’s also important to the ecosystem inside of you that keeps you healthy: your microbiome. So, we hope you eat and enjoy all of the delicious offerings coming your way from our farms to your table each week!
