Welcome to stone fruit season!

Welcome to stone fruit season!

When you adopt a seasonal diet centered on eating local, organic food, your relationship with the world changes. You soon become hyper-aware of the seasons, and what foods are in-season.

The best part? There’s always something new and delicious to look forward to with each passing month.

It just so happens that the earth’s tilt is now perfectly aligned to allow for one of our favorite seasons of the year…

Assorted fruit box during summer last year

Some might call it late spring or early summer, but for those tuned into farms in the San Diego area, it’s now stone fruit season.

What’s a stone fruit?

There are quite a few delicious fruits (and nuts) in the stone fruit family, including:

  • peaches
  • cherries
  • plums
  • nectarines
  • apricots
  • pluots
  • almonds
  • apriums

We’ve previously written about apriums and pluots during “stone fruit season” in years past.

Some stone fruits (apriums, pluots, nectarines) are relatively new hybrids of other stone fruits that took plant breeders decades to develop.

California has been the epicenter of stone fruit cultivation over the past century, but stone fruits’ can be traced back to Asia, where wild varieties were originally domesticated.

This week: Simka plums headed your way

Organic Simka Plums from Sweet Tree Farms

As we continue forward through stone fruit season, expect to see lots of delicious fruit showing up in your home Farm Boxes or business Breakroom boxes.

This week, we’ve got juicy and delicious Simka plums headed your way from Sweet Tree Farm and Smit Farms, two awesome local USDA certified organic farms serving the San Diego area. (If you haven’t already read it, check out our farmer highlight featuring Annie Florendo/Sweet Tree Farms.)

Simka plums are relatively large, heart-shaped plums with purple skin and gold-colored flesh. They’re especially good for fresh eating: extra juicy and flavorful.

How do you eat a Simka plum?

Last year in our aprium article, we wrote about the proper way to eat apriums and other juicy and delicious stone fruit. We advise you to follow these instructions when your Simka plums arrive.

Refresher course below:

Please follow these exact instructions, step by step:

  1. Find a dark room, away from other people.
  2. Play Vivaldi’s Winter, The Four Seasons (Concerto No. 4 in F minor, Op. 8, RV 297) – use the video player above if needed.
  3. As the music initiates, begin smelling the raw, ripe Simka plum in your hand, appreciating each sweet note, but refrain from eating.
  4. Once you get to the 40 second mark on the concerto, you may begin taking small bites of your Simka plum.
  5. By the completion of the song (about 9 minutes), you should be finished with your Simka plum.
  6. Clean yourself with a napkin or towel as necessary and repeat as many times as necessary.

Or this is another way!
